1809 William Hyde Wollaston, a British chemist, compared the oxides of
gallium with tantalum, and found that the densities of the oxides were
5.918 g / cm and more than 8 g / cm, respectively. </span><span class="" style="font-size:16px;">Although the density varies widely, he still considers the two to be identical.</span> <span class="" style="font-size:16px;">Another
German chemist, Heinrich Rose, dismissed this conclusion in 1846 and
claimed that there were two other elements in the original tantalite
sample.</span> <span class="" style="font-size:16px;">He names the two elements "Niobium" and "Pelopium" with Niobe, the daughter of Tantalus in Greek mythology, and his son Pelops.</span> <span class="" style="font-size:16px;">The
differences between tantalum and niobium are subtle, and the resulting
new "elements" Pelopium, Ilmenium and Dianium are virtually all niobium
or niobium-tantalum mixtures.</span></span>
