<span id="result_box" class=""><span style="font-size:16px;">The C-103 alloy was a niobium alloy developed by Huachang and Boeing in the early 1960s. </span><span style="font-size:16px;">Due
to the Cold War and the space race, DuPont, United Carbide, General
Electric and many other U.S. companies are also developing niobium-based
alloys. </span><span style="font-size:16px;">Niobium
and oxygen easily react, so the production process to be carried out in
a vacuum or inert gas environment, which greatly increased the cost and
difficulty. </span><span style="font-size:16px;">Vacuum
arc remelting (VAR) and electron beam melting (EBM) were the most
advanced manufacturing processes of the time, prompting the development
of various niobium alloys. </span><span style="font-size:16px;">Since
1959, the research project finally produced C-103 after testing a total
of 256 niobium alloys in "C Series" (possibly with the initials of
"Columbium"). </span><span style="font-size:16px;">These alloys can be melted into pellets or flakes. </span><span style="font-size:16px;">Huachang had hafnium derived from a nuclear-grade zirconium alloy at that time and hoped to develop its commercial application. </span><span style="font-size:16px;">The
so-called 103-component Nb-10Hf-1Ti alloy in Series C has the best
balance between forgeability and high temperature properties, so
Huachang produced the first 500-pound C- </span><span style="font-size:16px;">103 alloy for turbine engine components and liquid metal heat exchangers. </span><span style="font-size:16px;">Other
niobium alloys of the same period included FS85 (Nb-10W-28Ta-1Zr) from
Firsteel Metallurgical, Cb129Y (Nb-10W-10Hf-0.2Y) from Huachang and
Boeing, Cb752 (Nb- </span><span style="font-size:16px;">10W-2.5Zr) and the superior pipe company Nb1Zr.</span></span>
