Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS, also
written as micro-electro-mechanical, MicroElectroMechanical or microelectronic
and microelectromechanical systems and the related micromechatronics) is the
technology of microscopic devices, particularly those with moving parts. It
merges at the nano-scale into nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) and
nanotechnology. MEMS are also referred to as micromachines in Japan, or micro
systems technology (MST) in Europe.

MEMS are separate and distinct from the hypothetical
vision of molecular nanotechnology or molecular electronics. MEMS are made up
of components between 1 and 100 micrometres in size (i.e. 0.001 to 0.1 mm), and
MEMS devices generally range in size from 20 micrometres to a millimetre (i.e.
0.02 to 1.0 mm). They usually consist of a central unit that processes data
(the microprocessor) and several components that interact with the surroundings
such as microsensors. At these size scales, the standard constructs of classical
physics are not always useful. Because of the large surface area to volume
ratio of MEMS, surface effects such as electrostatics and wetting dominate over
volume effects such as inertia or thermal mass.

The potential of very small machines was
appreciated before the technology existed that could make them (see, for
example, Richard Feynman's famous 1959 lecture There's Plenty of Room at the
Bottom). MEMS became practical once they could be fabricated using modified
semiconductor device fabrication technologies, normally used to make electronics.
These include molding and plating, wet etching (KOH, TMAH) and dry etching (RIE
and DRIE), electro discharge machining (EDM), and other technologies capable of
manufacturing small devices. An early example of a MEMS device is the
resonistor – an electromechanical monolithic resonator.
A military armored (or armoured) car is a lightweight wheeled armored fighting vehicle, historically employed for reconnaissance, internal security, armed escort, and other subordinate battlefield tasks. With the gradual decline of mounted cavalry, armored cars were developed for carrying out duties formerly assigned to horsemen. Following the invention of the tank, the armored car remained popular due to its comparatively simplified maintenance and low production cost. It also found favor with several colonial armies as a cheaper weapon for use in underdeveloped regions. During World War II, most armored cars were engineered for reconnaissance and passive observation, while others were devoted to communications tasks. Some equipped with heavier armament could even substitute for tracked combat vehicles in favorable conditions-such as pursuit or flanking maneuvers during the North African Campaign.

Since World War II the traditional functions of the armored car have been occasionally combined with that of the armored personnel carrier, resulting in such multipurpose designs as the Cadillac Gage Commando.Postwar advances in recoil control technology have also made it possible for a few armored cars, including the AMX-10RC and EE-9 Cascavel, to carry large cannon capable of threatening many tanks.
